Delicious food from the south of Holland (Breda!), great interior design, atmosphere and really good service. We are hooked! Elsje and I finally found a time to catch up together so we needed to find a good new spot for this. Very last minute we decided to try the new restaurant Breda as it was closeby (central Amsterdam) and the interior look and feel looked very tasteful. Apparently they are booked up for the next few weeks ahead but they had a last minute cancellation – lucky us. They let you choose between 3 types of menus: Basic, Extra and Full Monty, and don’t tell you much about the menu. The Basic already consists of 7 courses and oh my, they were so good. Our favourites: the cauliflower dish, steak with hummus and purple carrot and the rosemary ice cream with nuts and nougat for desert… Aaah! Can’t wait to go back! My expectations had become (slightly unrealistically) high when it took me over a year to get a reservation but when I finally managed to get a reservation this week it didn’t disappoint. The chef Ollie Dabbous has worked at the Fat Cat and trained at Michelin star restaurants so the food was supposed to be incredible and it was… Not only was the it beautifully presented, the taste was amazing. Very refreshing and not too complicated. Starting with homemade bread that was way too good to resist, a Pea & Mint starter that literally looked like a summer garden, followed by a beautiful light fish, perfect tasting lamb and burrata mozzarella with wild strawberries… The staff warmed up as the evening progressed but I didn’t find them as friendly as I hoped. The restaurant looks stripped back and industrially cool, and the bar downstairs is a great spot for cocktails (and dates). As expected a night at Dabbous doesn’t come cheap. It’s £48 for set dinner, a £58 tasting menu or lunch for £28. 39 Whitfield Street | Tube: Goodge Street | +44(0)207 323 1544 | Website | ££££
We were lucky to save on our car ride with Uber that night and are excited to gift our readers a £20 discount too! Just use the code OLBB in the Uber app* and you’re good to go (sorry this is for London readers only at the moment).
